Treating Astigmatism In Patients With Cataracts

Modern cataract surgery is not your grandfather's surgery! If you have asigmatism we can not only make you see better over-all, but we can also treat your astigmatism. Dr. Darrell White is an expert in using Intra-Ocular Lenses (IOL's) that correct astigmatism.

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye. The lens sits in back of your pupil. As we get older the lens becomes harder, making it harder to focus. This is why we need reading glasses in our 40's. As we get even older (and sometimes in younger people, too), part or all of the crystalline lens becomes cloudy, sometimes yello-brown, too. This makes our vision blurry even with glasses or contact lenses. When that happens the only treatment is to take the cataract out.

If you have astigmatism you can choose to NOT HAVE TO WEAR GLASSES for most (maybe all!) of your far-away vision. You can choose to have Dr. White put in a Toric IOL, an implanted lens to give you clear vision AND correct your astigmatism. Imagine...after a life of glasses and contact lense for astigmatism...after cataract surgery you could choose not to have to wear glasses for lots of your far-away vision!

If you live in the Cleveland area Dr. Darrell White and Skyvision Centers in Westlake are the people and the place for expert treatment of astigmatism when you have cataract surgery!

SkyVision's Demandforce in now in Passbook!

Do you have an iPhone? Are you using Passbook to store appointment information?  If not, make sure to read this . . . . .

Demandforce is now in Passbook!

What is Passbook?

Passbook is one of the cool new features from Apple for the iPhone iOS 6 that gives consumers an easy way to organize movie tickets, gift cards, coupons, boarding passes and more. The days of rummaging through your email or wallet for print outs is over.  Think of Passbook just like a mobile wallet.

Passbook also uses your calendar and location intelligently, so your boarding pass automatically appears when you arrive at the airport and your coffee rewards card will open when you enter your favorite coffee shop. Plus, Passbook updates you with relevant information or alerts, such as a gate or departure time change at the airport. Now that’s pretty awesome.

How does Demandforce work with Passbook?

When a SkyVision patient receives an email confirmation on their iPhone they now have the option to add it to Passbook with one click, just like the new digital boarding passes or movie tickets. Now, the appointment details are stored in their phone, are always easy to find, and you’re always right in the customer’s pocket!

How to use Passbook

First things first, start by adjusting the settings on your iPhone to turn on the location services.

Passbook is installed on the iPhone and iPod Touch with iOS 6, but the app is not available on the iPad. The app itself doesn’t include any passes, or the ability to create new passes. The store, airline, or movie theater has to start offering the ability to add passes to Passbook.

To use a “pass” or “card”, select it in the Passbook app, and then point your phone at the scanner or barcode reader at the counter - then you’re all set!

Currently there are only a handful of apps that work with Passbook, but the list is always changing. These apps are located in the App Store. You might also start to notice an “Add to Passbook” link on a website, email, attachment, or message when you are on your mobile phone — which you can select and add to Passbook.  It’s that easy.

Protect Your LASIK Investment!

OK...you've gone and done it! You had LASIK!! You now have fantastic distance vision without wearing glasses or contact lenses. You are free to do all the stuff you love to do without having your contacts fog up or your glasses slip off your nose. Now what?

Dr. Darrell White, one of Cleveland, Ohio's most experienced LASIK surgeons tells every one of our Skyvision Centers LASIK patients that it is vitally important to protect your eyes from Ultraviolet light after Laser Vision Correction, whether you had LASIK or PRK. Not only that, but you can actually enhance your vision and your visual performance by choosing thetype of sunglasses after your LASIK.

The basic advice is the same for everyone. You have to come in at the RayBan level of UV protection. If you have a pair of RayBans, or if you have a fashion frame like Fendi or Marc Jacobs which have RayBan-like lenses, you are OK as far as UV protection goes. As you move UP the sunglass food chain the UV protection is the same but the quality of your vision is enhanced. Nike, Oakley, Kaenon...better vision and some really cool activity-specific options like the unbelievable Nike Golf Tint in their MaxTint series.

The top of the sunglasses food chain is Maui Jim. Dr. White has been known to wear multiple different Maui Jim's because he loves how they improve his vision! They are polarized, have special coatings to shed water --they were developed by surfers, after all--and they come in three distinct shades: Bronze, Gray, and Rose. They're just FANTASTIC!!

So congratulations on your LASIK. Now it's time to protect your investment, and why not see even BETTER while you're at it. Get a high quality pair of sunglasses!

Daily Disposable Soft Contacts

Dr. Kaye is our contact lens expert in our Westlake, Ohio Skyvision Center. We recently asked him about advances in contact lenses, and about what his recommedations are for new contact lens patients:

"It's amazing how many new things we have in the contact lens world! More and more people can wear soft contact lenses with great vision and really good comfort. One of our major concerns is always safety. The new one-day disposable contact lenses are the safest type of soft lens yet!

Each day you open a new lens for each eye. The lens is fresh, and it comes out of its package sterile. At night you remove the lenses and throw them away. No need to clean them, and since you throw them away at night they never get a chance to wear out.

One of the problems contact lens patients can have is something called a corneal ulcer, an infection in the window of the eye. These are most often associated with poor lens cleaning, wearing the lenses overnight, or continuing to wear a lens past it's time. With daily disposables all of these potential causes for corneal infections are removed!"

If you live in Cleveland and the surrounding towns come visit Dr. Gregory Kaye at Skyvision Centers in Westlake, right across Crocker Road from Crocker Park to get fit with the latest one-day disposable contact lenses from ProClear or Ciba!

Macular Degeneration and the iPad

Consumer electronics are making inroads into eyecare! Patients with Macular Degeneration (AMD) now have the option of using electronic devices like the iPad from Apple to assist them in using the vision that they still have, and also to help monitor the progress of their disease.

Traditionally individuals with vision loss have had to use specialty visual aids in order to improve their vision. Magnifiers and CCTV's have been a godsend for folks who have trouble reading because of AMD. Many of these devices are difficult to use or very expensive. About 3 years ago the doctors at Skyvision Centers in Westlake, just outside of Cleveland, started to experiment with electronic reading devices like the Kindle, the Sony Reader, the Nook, and then the iPad. All four have the ability to magnify reading material, and nowadays you have access to not only books but also magazines and newspapers on all of them.

The iPad 2 from Apple is now equipped with a camera. Programs called "apps" are coming out which should allow you to scan a written page or picture and then magnify it automatically on the iPad screen. In upcoming posts we will do reviews of these apps as well as offer some tips on their use.

The SightBook app is a tool that allows patients to evaluate their vision at home and share that information with their eye doctor. A series of up close vision tests is taken by a patient using an iPad connected to the internet. Any changes will then be sent to the eye doctor. This is a free app available through the iTunes store. We'll check it out and report back soon!
